Dear Diary:
Day 2 of 21 days of mandatory hotel quarantine in Hong Kong
I wake up before the crack of dawn thanks to a 16 hour time difference. My 2 roommates are still in deep slumber. I walk over to the window and peek outside, still dark. 5:42am. Drats. I’m wide awake.
Oh well, carpe diem, I guess!
I head into the bathroom, washed up, boiled water (because duh…we’re Chinese, hot water for healthy), organised the bathroom and hand-washed some clothes. I feel like I’m in Little House on the Prairie or I’m LiZi Qi or something (Wow that was such a first world response)
By the time I was done, the sun had started to rise and I sat in front of the window and thought I’d try mediating while watching the sunrise. There is something so satisfying for a night owl like me, to be awake at the crack of dawn and meditating

It was only a little after 7am when I finished my meditation, this is crazy! I feel I’ve done so much already! I’m feeling good, feeling zen and productive. I feel aliiiiive! I feel on top of the world!! Maybe this whole quarantine thing wasn’t such a bad idea.
My roommates had woken up by this point, we made some complimentary instant coffee the hotel provided for us. Meh, not the best, but it won’t kill me either. I’ve decided to keep this productive momentum going by setting up our little “home” for the next 3 weeks.
We were organising our little living space, when we received a knock on the door. Oooh I have never felt so excited by a little knock on the door. I grabbed my mask to open the door. No one. Hmm….weird. I looked around and saw a bag of food sitting on the door. Yay breakfast!

For today’s breakfast menu:
- 1000 year old egg with pork congee
- Chinese rice rolls with traditional peanut and hoisin sauce (in a package)
- a box of Oolong tea.
Totally surpassed my expectations, 9/10!
Getting pretty pumped about hotel food, not sure why everyone was complaining!

The rest of the morning was spent setting up the “kitchen area” and my office. Calling up family to bring items that we needed, there’s definitely certain items you’ll need if you ever do a 3 week hotel quarantine. I’ll write about that later.
As I’m not much of a camping sorta gal, suddenly living in a hotel became quite a humbling experience.
<first world problems> Like I found myself struggling to wash our containers with hotel sized shampoo instead of detergent. There weren’t enough hangers for 3
people. Trying to heat our food from an electric kettle, etc </first world problems>
Basic necessities began to show their importance.
I never knew how important scissors or a knife would be.
I find myself channelling my inner Bear Grylls, surviving in the concrete wilderness of a hotel.
How do I heat up my cold lunch in an electric kettle? How do I utilise a plastic fork to cut my apple? Will Vicky make it out of this alive?
Yours Truly,
Vicky Bear “effing” Grylls
